ABSTRACT

FBI reports secured by the author revealed a persistent monitoring of Pentecostal and Spiritualist groups suspected of expressing Black Nationalist ideology, antiwar sentiments during World Wars I and II, and Communist sympathies during the early 50s. The Church of God, Church of God in Christ, Saints of Christ and "Daddy Grace's" House of Prayer organization were particular targets of FBI investigations. The Church of God was accused of teaching ministers to avoid the draft in 1918 and were thus nothing more than German propagandists. Bishop Mason (COGIC) was also accused of anti-war, pro-German sentiment. Bishop Croom's was investigated for telling African-Americans not to fight in World War II (1943).
