When Walton Hamilton wrote, in 1941, that it had "taken a decade to elevate Mr. Justice Holmes from deity to mortality," 1 he spoke with wisdom on his subject, but he spoke too soon. The champions of Holmes' apotheosis were not finished: Those who would assign him to a warmer eternity were just beginning. 2
