ABSTRACT

Music is as old as childhood itself. Indeed, it is thought that the earliest music emerged as primitive people sang and danced to the many gods that they worshipped. With songs that flowed from the sounds of nature, they prayed to rain gods by creating melodies that imitated the falling rain. They prayed to wind gods by singing and swaying as if they were molded by the air. They used their music to express joy when they completed successful hunts, and sorrow when acts of nature destroyed their surroundings. Music, they believed, was both crafted by nature and was thought to determine it.
