ABSTRACT

The United States has moved into a new social period, the postmodern era, which marks a momentous shift in the values and sentiments that govern our lives. This shift affects our society in general and our families in particular. The postmodern family is different than the modern family, and the postmodern young child is different than the modern young child. In the same manner, early childhood education accommodates the changes in the children it serves. In this essay, postmodernism in general and some characteristics of the postmodern family, the postmodern young child, and postmodern early childhood education are described briefly.
