ABSTRACT

The hare is enticed to the palace of the Dragon King by a turtle in order that his liver might be used to cure the king's illness. The hare persuades them that he has left his liver on dry land for safety, goes back for it, and so makes his escape. See Kim T'aejun, 131-134,Kim Kidong, 156-161 (1956: 361-365), Pak SOngiii, 301-307, and Sin Kihyong, 367-376. All call it Korea's most popular folk tale, and mention similar stories from India and from elsewhere in the Far East. In the versions which I have read closely, the satire appears to be gentle and general, rather than pointed.
