Was the inspiration

for this story the ~Wlr Hong Kiltong of the early fifteenth century whose family records note that "because of his magical powers there is a story about him", or was it the #1<~/llJ Hong Kiltong of the early sixteenth century, an historical brigand? Or was it both of them, or neither? Did Ho Kyun write this story in Korean or hanmun? Why, indeed, it there no corroborating evidence that he wrote it at all? In addition, Kim Tonguk is critical of ChOng Chudong's use of texts, but it should be stressed that he also finds much to commend in the work.
