On November 14, 1991, when the cohosts of “NFL This Weekend,” a nightly sports news show on Cable channel ESPN, expressed their reactions to basketball star Earvin (Magic) Johnson’s earlier announcement that he has the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), no one really expected any new light to be shed on the topic of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
