ABSTRACT

Antiphonal singing, in which lyrics are sung in turn by two or more singers, is a common style of folk song in many parts of China. Throughout the south, large antiphonal singing festivals are still held among millions of people belonging to such ethnic nationalities as the Zhuang, Yi, Yao, Miao, Molao, Dong, and Tujia. Rice farming on hillside fields is the traditional way of life for most of these peoples. The language families they represent include Tai, Tibeto-Burman, and Miao-Yao.
