ABSTRACT

Galicia, a semiautonomous region in northwest Spain, is bordered by the regions of Asturias and Castile-León on the east, the Bay of Biscay on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the west, and Portugal on the south. Its coastline—breached by a number of sunken estuaries—has been likened to the fjords of Norway, its rainy weather to that of England and Ireland. The people speak Galego (Galician), a language related to Portuguese, although most Galicians also speak Castilian Spanish.
