ABSTRACT

Between 1974 and 19871 went almost every year to do fieldwork in Kysuce, a mountain region in Northwest Slovakia. This particular territory was to prove a very interesting terrain for folk narrative research. Following World War II fundamental changes occurred in the way people lived in the area. The advent of modernization, which began at the end of the 1950s, brought with it industrialization, urbanization, the collectivization of agriculture, the development of mass communication, and higher standards of education, which were eventually to transform the region.
