ABSTRACT

One of the Egyptian storytelling traditions observed by researchers in the nineteenth century was the telling depending on one narrator telling the story by using a series of pictures. These pictures may be unrelated to the story narrated. The narrator uses in his performance a wooden box called Sandouk El Donia or Sifira Aziza. This is one of the folk shows involving some dramatic elements. The dramatic element is provided by the solo narrator, who rolls the pictures and moves toys while describing and commenting on the content of the picture in a monotonous way and a mechanical style. Sometimes the comment may differ from the content of the picture. Often the series of pictures consists of 20 different pictures. They depict heroes of the Egyptian epic (Al Seira) or sometimes pictures of movie stars.
