ABSTRACT
The functions of the basic themes of the Chilean folktale constitute, by exercise of the narrative art, a conception of human beings and their world and of the people who cultivate the genre. These particular functions come together in the primary function, fundamentally pleasant, of enjoyment, elevation of the soul. This function is interpretative as well as didactic.
