ABSTRACT
The first Polish novels started appearing at about the same time the genre matured in Western Europe, i.e., in the second half of the 18th century. And although the Polish word for novel, powiesc, had been used even earlier, in medieval writings, it meant no more than a prose work, mostly a free translation from Latin, which until the Renaissance period in the 16th century dominated Polish letters.
