ABSTRACT

The founding of the state of Israel in 1948 was followed by a war with neighboring Arab states and the forced expulsion of many Palestinians. Many others lived in little more than ghettos, and clamor grew for an independent Palestinian homeland and the destruction of Israel. Terrorism by both Arab and Jew became more common and less random. Sustained terror campaigns were initiated by the newly founded Palestine Liberation Organization. These activities intensified following the Arabs’ military defeat in the Six-Day War of 1967.
