ABSTRACT

The media has a legitimate right to report and comment on acts of terrorism, but must remain vigilant to make sure it is not being manipulated by terrorist organizations. Standards of impartiality have to be maintained, and it is critical that reporters are aware of the fact that terrorists require publicity to air their demands. Terrorists also know that their “spectacular” operations, such as those against key installations or prominent individuals, will be reported widely by news agencies as they engage in a battle for ratings.
