ABSTRACT

As if the horrors of the battlefield were not enough, much terrorism occurs on the sidelines of war. World War II saw examples of the worst atrocities of all time. Many acts of violence were sanctioned by governments, others were the work of frenzied individuals. The war was characterized by a degree of savagery in Axis occupation policy never before witnessed. Even the norms of warfare were barbarized by the bitter, often ideologically inspired, fighting. The line between combatants and civilians blurred as few could escape the effects of all-out slaughter and torture.
