ABSTRACT

The original purpose of the Internet was to allow scientists in various parts of the world to exchange information regardless of their type of computer. Later, some Internet areas became increasingly sophisticated, allowing a more advanced technology to be transmitted online. Although some earlier protocols, such as Telnet and Gopher, can read only text and cannot transmit illustrations and graphics, they are still employed at certain online sites, such as libraries, which may use them for their online cataloguing systems. The most popular and fastest-growing part of the Internet, however, is the World Wide Web and its multimedia environment.
