ABSTRACT

Electronic data found on the Internet, the newest site to store information, is becoming an important aspect of art research. For most research projects, however, this online material needs to be supplemented with other information formats. Good researchers know the tools of their trade: the pros and cons of different formats, which formats are better for what purposes, and how to locate significant material using these information tools. This chapter briefly discusses (a) printed books, (b) archives and vertical files, (c) microforms, (d) CD-ROMs, and (e) documentary videos. An overview of each format is provided, accompanied by review sources and publishers’ Web sites.
