ABSTRACT

With the development of the World Wide Web and its ability to display graphic material, museums became the ideal institutions to use this newest information format. The Internet is providing an excellent means for museums to expand their audiences. Not only are well-known institutions represented, but smaller museums with more regional reputations are providing significant material. Museums of all sizes and descriptions have Internet home pages. These institutions are embracing the Web, in order to

disseminate basic museum information

encourage people who surf the Web to visit the museum, to view special exhibitions and the permanent collection, and to attend lectures and workshops

share the museum staff’s expertise and databases through online exhibitions, library facilities, and educational programs

promote their resources to a worldwide community
