ABSTRACT

Trauma is a leading cause of death and serious injury on expeditions. Major trauma is predominantly caused by road traffic accidents and falls. It is important to remember the limitations of medical care in a remote environment. One of the main factors that aids survival in victims of serious trauma is early access to definitive care, i.e. surgery and intensive care facilities. Once basic resuscitation and management of the casualty’s airway, breathing and circulation are under way, rapid evacuation is essential. This chapter is largely intended for medically trained professionals.
