ABSTRACT

From an early age, Rosa Luxemburg was a political activist who encouraged socialist revolution as a way to improve the life of the average person and bring an end to divisions between people based on race, class, or religion. Luxemburg's establishment of the German Communist Party in December 1918 attracted few followers. Luxemburg was a female political activist who was highly respected by Europe's great revolutionary socialist leaders at a time when women in general did not participate in politics and certainly did not receive the attention of the major socialists. However, her strident activism, especially in the context of other outstanding activists of the day such as Emmeline Pankhurst, Alexandra Kollontai, and Emma Goldman, showed that women had a broad and powerful role to play in politics, and that socialism, especially radical socialism, might provide a path to liberation for women in Europe and abroad.
