ABSTRACT

Despite great adversity, Aung San Suu Kyi has used her status as the daughter of a famous Burmese independence activist and her own beliefs in freedom to challenge the corrupt military regime, the SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council), that rules Burma today. Born in 1945, Aung San Suu Kyi came from a family already deeply involved in the creation and post-independence politics of modern Burma. Her father, General Aung San, was integral to fighting the colonial occupation of Burma by the British and was to serve as the first post-independence leader of Burma, but was assassinated in 1947. In 1967, after graduating from Oxford, Aung San Suu Kyi went to work for the United Nations in New York. Aung San Suu Kyi has used her family's fame, her devotion to human rights, and her own determination to resist the abuses of the SLORC government.
