ABSTRACT

Growth in domestic and foreign demand for U.S. crops and livestock will determine to a large extent the pressures that will be placed on U.S. agricultural land resources in the next twenty-five years. In this chapter the principal crops examined are grains and oilseeds. The demand for different categories of meats is projected in order to estimate the growth in demand for feedgrains and protein meals as well as forage and pasture. The projections of growth in demand are based, not only on increased food requirements, but also on such nonfood uses as the production of ethanol from grains.
