ABSTRACT

Brazil is an important producer of minerals, and foreign investors are playing a significant role in the development of its abundant iron ore and manganese reserves. Brazil’s measured, indicated, and inferred iron ore reserves have been estimated (as of 1967) as being in excess of 45 billion tons, or 18 percent of the world’s known reserves. 1 In 1964 Brazil produced about 13 million tons of ore (64 percent Fe), or 2.3 percent of world output. About 10 million tons of Brazil’s output was exported. Brazilian production has been projected to increase to 20 million tons of iron ore (65 percent Fe) by 1970 and to 39 million tons by 1975 (4.7 percent of estimated world output by 1975), the bulk of which is destined for export.
