ABSTRACT

The case studies presented in this book have dealt with a wide variety of issues concerning host country-foreign investor relations which are typical of those found in the mineral and petroleum industries in the developing countries of the world. They throw light upon, but do not provide definitive answers to, the questions analyzed in our first three chapters concerning (a) the contribution of foreign investment in resource industries to economic development; and (b) the nature of host country-foreign investor conflict and accommodation in the production of resources. This concluding chapter begins with a résumé of the principal findings that emerge from the case studies, followed by an analysis, based on the results of the case studies, of what I regard to be the major problem areas arising out of foreign investment in the resource industries.
