ABSTRACT

The twin concerns of this book—foreign investor-host country conflicts and the contribution of resource industries to social and economic progress—are both affected by relations between foreign investors and labor in resource industries, as illustrated by many examples in the case studies. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an analytical framework for the relevant problems in this area and to present supplementary material on labor relations in the foreign investments covered by the case studies. The specific issues with which this chapter is concerned are: (1) labor organization and labor legislation; (2) the factors responsible for the relatively high wages and fringe benefits in the resource industries; (3) the economic and social impacts of foreign company labor policies; (4) foreign company investment in the domestic labor supply; and (5) labor relations under emerging forms of resource industry ownership and control.
