ABSTRACT

Marion Russell considers the legislative requirements for supporting children in care. Children who are six to eight times more likely than the rest of the school population to have a Statement of Special Educational Needs. She emphasises the importance of teamwork across services, informed by accurate data-gathering and working in the context of corporate parental responsibility, where the challenge of advocacy and aspiration become part of the corporate professional role. Personal Education Plans are suggested as a mechanism for this endeavour, drawing together key people responsible for the child's wellbeing to contribute in a coherent manner.
