ABSTRACT

THE PRESSURES OF ‘delivering’ a curriculum in order to meet objectives, targets and assessments often result in a lack of time to explore learners’ individual needs and develop teaching and learning strategies in response to these needs. This chapter emphasises the importance of individual experience as a resource for learning. A range of learning style models is addressed and suggestions are made for linking these to experiential learning. The roles of socialisation and collaboration are discussed and practical suggestions are made for the utilisation of concepts that have a particular relevance to building on learners’ experience, such as collaborative learning, discovery learning and deep and surface learning. A technique for active reading is included in order to develop a selective approach to using learning resources and finally, a guide to writing for academic and assignment purposes is provided.
