ABSTRACT

The impact of AIDS on agricultural output may be new, but it is by no means the only threat to food security. Among the major food security threats on the horizon are the loss of diversity of plant and animal species, the emergence of new diseases and foodborne illnesses, and food bioterror. The major food security threats on the horizon are the loss of diversity of plant and animal species, the emergence of new diseases and foodborne illnesses, and food bioterror. For instance, chemical-based pesticides and insecticides initially allowed farmers to reduce their losses to bugs and disease. While threats to food security seem to be multiplying—from HIV/AIDS and climate change to the loss of agricultural diversity and emerging animal diseases-there are no shortage of solutions to ensuring a safe food supply. Keeping livestock healthy and free from disease also strengthens food security.
