ABSTRACT

The current situation is most alarming. Unless a solution is soon found, we will witness the almost complete destruction of this forest landscape that is fundamental for the biological equilibrium of the Mediterranean region. It should be stressed that despite their biological wealth, diversity and peculiarities, Mediterranean woodlands have never been thoroughly studied, and very little is therefore known about the structure and functions of the numerous subsystems found within them. What is more, forest experts have tended to employ conservation and management techniques designed for European woodlands which are not necessarily applicable in Mediterranean conditions.
