ABSTRACT
Within the UN system, UNIDO has the lead role in industrial development. It is man-dated by its constitution to promote and accelerate industrial development in devel-oping countries and encourage industrial co-operation. The ultimate aim is to create a better life for people by laying the indus-trial foundations for long-term prosperity and economic strength. Acting as a global forum for industrial development, UNIDO brings together representatives of govern-ment, industry, and the public and private sector, as well as civil society from devel-oped and developing countries and coun-tries with economies in transition. UNIDO is also a service organization, supporting the industrial development efforts of its clients through its technical co-operation pro-grammes and putting into practice the prin-ciples developed at the global forum level.
