ABSTRACT

At the end of 1994 total Less Developed Country (LDC) debt outstanding amounted to US$1,921 billion, of which US$1,523 billion was long-term debt (debt with a maturity of more than one year). In the same year US$169 billion of debt service was paid to the creditors. Sub-Saharan Africa has a total debt of US$212 billion (US$165 billion long-term debt) and paid an annual average of US$10.7 billion on debt service between 1990 and 1994, substantially more than the US$9 billion which UNICEF estimates is needed for health, nutrition, family planning and education.
