ABSTRACT
Basic education was defined for the purposes of the 20:20 Initiative as follows:
Primary schooling and alternative programmes: curriculum development, teacher education, provision of learning materials, evaluation of learning achievements, improved management at system and institutional levels.
Early childhood development: child care, stimulation and initial learning through family and community-based programmes and pre-school institutions.
Basic education for youth and adults: programmes in various sectors of activity that provide training in literacy and numeracy and other essential life skills. Basic education through traditional and modern media and social action to enable individuals and families to acquire knowledge and skills needed for better living
