ABSTRACT

Basic education was defined for the purposes of the 20:20 Initiative as follows:

Primary schooling and alternative programmes: curriculum development, teacher education, provision of learning materials, evaluation of learning achievements, improved management at system and institutional levels.

Early childhood development: child care, stimulation and initial learning through family and community-based programmes and pre-school institutions.

Basic education for youth and adults: programmes in various sectors of activity that provide training in literacy and numeracy and other essential life skills.
