ABSTRACT
The public health field uses a succinct term to describe the phenomenon when more deaths occur than would be expected under normal conditions in a given population: excess mortality. Excess mortality refers to any premature death or death prior to the average life expectancy for a particular demographic group (Mosby, 2009).
