Social Mobility in Britain book
Social mobility has a curious place in modern sociological scholarship: it looms both large and small. On the one hand, research on the subject is one of sociology's success stories-one of many, I hasten to add, lest I be taken to damn our much maligned discipline by faint praise; but a distinct success story all the same, as it will be part of my purpose to show. On the other hand, I doubt whether many professional sociologists-other than specialists in this neck of the woods itself-would spontaneously put inquiry into social mobility high on their lists, if challenged to enumerate sociology's main achievements in recent decades. I doubt especially whether most students of sociology-British undergraduates at leastemerge from their programmes of study with more than a hazy and fragmented understanding of the central findings from the now substantial body of work on social mobility.
