ABSTRACT

Willy Brown’s stimulating chapter concentrates on the two works by Goldthorpe dealing with the reform of collective bargaining in Britain and the sociology of inflation. Some of the criticisms of Goldthorpe’s work advanced by Brown are similar to those outlined in my own contribution, and his contention that sociological bricks should be reinforced where appropriate with institutional straw is one with which I would concur. I wish, however, to make three observations on the argument developed by Brown.
