ABSTRACT

Although the main aim of this chapter is to review ways in which data is collected, it is important first to clarify the use of the terms ‘techniques’ and ‘strategies’, the meanings of which, like ‘observation’ itself, tend to vary from context to context. In this book the following meanings are recognised:

Techniques sampling systems used in the collection of evidence, including continuous recording, and event- and time-recording;

Strategies the means by which the information will be recorded (checklists, diaries, field notes, and schedules).
