ABSTRACT

Physical education (PE) is one of the seven foundation subjects in the basic National Curriculum with three components: attainment targets (ATs), programme of study (PoS) and assessment arrangements. For PE there is one single AT which is the summation of all the end of Key Stage descriptions, and to meet this AT pupils should be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of athletic activities, dance, games, gymnastic activities, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. Teachers are given the discretion to design schemes of work, assessment tasks and criteria, all based on the PoS and the pupil’s ability.
