ABSTRACT

However we choose to define the subject area of ‘food’, pupils working in this area have always been been required to prepare, combine and cook food materials. So what is different about food technology? In home economics subjects there has been a long tradition of looking at food as a home-produced commodity. The shift in emphasis in food technology means that pupils are no longer expected to spend their lessons ‘cooking meals for the family’ but should now be concerned with designing and making food products with market potential.
