ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a pre-school assessment model developed by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in response to the 1981 Education Act. The model, in operation for over 10 years, has been successful in providing high-quality assessment and intervention over time, facilitating multiprofessional and parental involvement and providing quality advice towards pre-school statutory assessments. The chapter also touches on more recent developments in pre-school assessment with Social Services day nurseries in response to The Children Act 1989. The chapter concludes by considering reasons for success, benefits of the model and future initiatives.
