ABSTRACT

Scope, formerly the Spastics Society, has for many years run a multidisciplinary assessment service. This has had a large number of different personnel over the years but essentially has always consisted of a group of professionals who have seen children and adults with cerebral palsy for a day’s assessment at our centre in Fitzroy Square, London. Why do parents come from all over England and Wales for a 1-day assessment at Scope? What does it offer which is not provided by local statutory services? It will be argued in this chapter that it offers parents a reduction of uncertainty by providing expert knowledge and a process of assessment based on empowerment.
