ABSTRACT

As we become aware of the possibilities of new technology, more computers are being bought by schools and services for use by people with profound disabilities. Advances are coming from the dissemination of good practice, inventive use of new equipment, and informed software development, rather than from research findings. Information and innovations, until recently, have been shared amongst networks of enthusiasts in the field. The published material that is now becoming available is mostly concerned with the contribution that technology can make to educational programmes, and the ways in which it can be used to enhance and develop communication; see, for example, Learning Through Interaction by Bozic and Murdoch (1995). In this chapter the potential for using technology in a wider context with adults as well as children will be explored.
