ABSTRACT

This book is written primarily for newly qualified primary teachers and any teachers interested in the application of psychologically based approaches in the classroom. Its orientation is eclectic, drawing on a variety of psychological theories we have found useful in our work as educational psychologists in schools. It is psychological in the sense that it is concerned with the science of the mind, particularly as this relates to the way in which teachers and pupils think about life and work in the classroom. It also introduces ways in which teachers can influence classroom culture and climate in order to ensure that all pupils learn effectively and develop a strong sense of self-esteem, whatever their level of ability.
