ABSTRACT

Values are an intrinsic part of Design and Technology because the nature of the subject deals with people’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural needs and differences. ‘What is needed for the future? What do people want? By what means could it be achieved and at what cost? How will what has been planned affect people, their environment now and in the future? Values and value judgements always emerge when striving for the best balance or proposing the most inclusive and potentially enhancing range of possibilities.’ (Standen 1992, p. 83). These feelings are expressed through the design and manufacture of products that we are able to evaluate from around the world by designers with different agendas, resources and manufacturing capabilities.
