ABSTRACT

The focus in the school curriculum on work as an aspect of adult life comes throughout schooling: two ‘cross-curricular themes’ require careers education, and economic and industrial understanding (EIU) to be covered (ACC 1990a, 1990b). Whole-school planning is needed to plot in which subjects different aspects of this could be covered; and in secondary schools particularly, a separate focus on careers and work experience is generally found. Some pupils begin to specialise in vocational courses in Key Stage 4 and beyond.
