ABSTRACT
In Chapter 2 we explored the relationship between science and the environment through an examination of certain key stages in the history of western science. In this chapter we will look at how views of nature have developed: the emergence of environmentalism, as an approach which questions the damaging effects of science and technology and seeks sustainable alternatives, is a direct reaction to the environmental excesses of industrial society. We will examine these ideas and outline the implications for science and environmental education.
