ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the research that has influenced The Catch Up Project, a literacy intervention programme for seven- to eight-year-old struggling readers. That research includes: the study that identified the need for an intervention; the small-scale classroom research project that looked at the most effective use of individual pupil/teacher time with weak readers in Years 2–6; evidence bases for other effective strategies that have been integrated into the Catch Up programme; and the pilot research that first monitored the effectiveness of the programme. The chapter sets the research within the context of how the programme was developed and one of the key assessments from the Catch Up programme, a reading attitude questionnaire, is presented as the link resource.
