ABSTRACT

We know that many young children learn about reading and writing at home, often before they move into an early years setting. By the time they are three years old many children are beginning to demonstrate reading and writing-like behaviour. They may not be reading and writing in the conventional sense as adults do. Nevertheless, they do read and write. How do young children acquire that knowledge without direct teaching? There are a number of activities and experiences, with support from adults, which help children as literacy learners.
