ABSTRACT

The use of systematic, school-wide approaches to behaviour management is increasing. The DfEE have mentioned ‘Assertive Discipline’ in their reports of good practice. Although this is the name of a commercial package originating from the United States, a number of schemes have emerged, some of which use the same terminology and principles. Lee Canter noted in a recent visit to the UK that ‘Assertive Discipline’ has become a generic term, much as the word ‘Hoover’ describes vacuum cleaners made by other manufacturers.
