ABSTRACT
This chapter makes the following points:
Early years education provision is extremely diverse within the United Kingdom.
Attempts to develop seamless and consistently high-quality provision for early years education have been fraught with difficulty, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has condemned much of the UICs preschool education.
Because early years education is increasingly seen as foundational to children’s development, a critical re-evaluation of early years education in terms of curriculum, assessment and inspection is an ongoing necessity.
